About The Position

The Student Nurse Extern I (SNE I) is a temporary, full-time role in the UNC Gastroenterology Clinic at Eastowne, offered as part of the Student Nurse Extern Program from May 24 through July 31, 2027. The program provides prelicensure nursing students with an immersive clinical experience to strengthen foundational nursing education and support professional role socialization. The SNE I works as a member of the patient care team alongside an RN partner, within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice. This externship is not an extension of school clinicals; activities such as IV or oral medication administration, assessment, documentation, and NGT or Foley insertion are not permitted when they are skills performed under a clinical instructor during school clinicals. The extern applies concepts learned in their nursing program while providing routine direct and indirect patient care in a clinic, hospital, or home health setting. All work is performed under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or provider. The assigned department’s Patient Services Manager or designated Education Leader is the reporting contact, and the RN partner supports learning and performance of nursing care activities in complex and non-complex situations. The position is onsite in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, scheduled as a day job for 40 hours per week, at $18.00 per hour.
