About The Position

The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) is offering an Academic Internship Program for undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in an accredited criminal justice program. The internship provides students with practical experience in various aspects of law enforcement, including forensic work, administrative duties, investigations, financial crimes, special victims cases, intelligence analysis, and police training. Placements are based on department needs, student qualifications, and availability, and require approval from academic advisors and the NHPD Training Academy Commander. Selected interns will need to sign release forms for background checks, ride-alongs, and confidentiality agreements.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and assist with forensic work in a laboratory setting.
  • Assist with locating, organizing, and documenting evidence from crime scenes.
  • Assist detectives during crime scene operations.
  • Observe the administrative and organizational side of policing.
  • Assist in organizing officer schedules and planning for special events.
  • Observe and assist in the deployment of the Motor Unit and the Accident Reconstruction Team.
  • Assist with all police reports including motor vehicle accidents, bias and hate complaints, and freedom of information requests.
  • Assist detectives with investigations and documentation of different types of crimes.
  • Review financial crime reports and determine if they meet the threshold for follow-up.
  • Learn about various financial scams and victim protection methods.
  • Contact complainants to obtain additional information.
  • Learn about financial crime investigation processes by shadowing a Detective.
  • Attend meetings with the Special Victims Unit (SVU) and Yale Child Study.
  • Review investigative reports and lab analysis.
  • Assist Detectives with SVU case investigations and shadow their investigations.
  • Perform office filing and auditing for the SVU.
  • Analyze shots fired incidents and learn the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) system.
  • Prepare PowerPoint presentations and assist in identifying wanted persons.
  • Attend meetings and assist in preparing other reports.
  • Work with plainclothes Detectives and Task Force Officers.
  • Assist with the processing of officer certification and in-service training.
  • Disseminate information to sworn personnel via practical and lineup training.
  • Assist in the set-up of In-Service classes for officer certification.
  • Coordinate instructors for the Police Officers Standards and Training Council.
  • Aid in the training of new recruits and officer development.
