About The Position

The pharmacy intern supports the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy. The individual also assists the pharmacy technician in assigned responsibilities, including pharmacy inventory management. Additionally, the pharmacy intern may be called upon to assist the Director of Clinical Services and to assist in the training of pharmacy externs rotating through the pharmacy.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the pharmacist, under direct supervision, in the practice of pharmacy, in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations
  • Assess prescription or medication order for completeness, accuracy, authenticity, and legality
  • Prepare prescription or medication order for final check by pharmacist including data entry in pharmacy processing system
  • Under supervision of the pharmacist, may give advice to self-medicating patients and dispense non-prescription medications
  • Under supervision of the pharmacist, may provide effective counseling on prescription related issues (i.e., adverse drug reactions, patients history which might bear on the prescribing decision, proper storage of medications, patient questions on medications, etc.)
  • Maintain open communication with various health professionals inside and outside the clinic
  • Perform patient immunization on an as-needed basis, under supervision of the pharmacist
  • Communicate with prescribers and their agents to obtain refill authorization
  • Communicate with outside pharmacies for the purpose of sending and receiving prescription transfers
  • Serve patients by working with pharmacist and pharmacy personnel in preparing medications, giving pharmacological information to multidisciplinary health care team, and monitoring patient drug therapies
  • Data entry and operation of all required software
  • Complete prescription filing, receiving and filing invoices, receiving medication orders and doing return to stocks every 14 days
  • Assist in maintaining of inventory management including but not limited to: Organize inventory on pharmacy shelves in order to increase prescription filling efficiencies (e.g., fast movers), Set and maintain appropriate stock-on-hand amounts, Track inventory usage and reorder appropriately, Identify and utilize the best acquisition costs, Checking for out of dates and removing from shelf, Perform regular cycle counts of inventory (report generated), Interface with return agency for expired and out-of-date medications
  • Serve as a contact for inventory related questions/needs for pharmacy/medical staff and patients
  • Answer phones and check voicemail messages as needed
  • Provide excellent customer service, responding to customer complaints and questions in an efficient and courteous manner while including the pharmacist in relevant communications
  • Support the Director of Clinical Services as needed
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Obtain and maintain up-to-date pharmacy intern license
