About The Position

Husky Health Center at the University of Washington has an excellent opportunity for a Student Healthcare Counselor in Primary Care to join our growing clinical staff. Reporting to the Health Services Manager, this position collaborates with clinicians and other team members to provide health counseling, patient care coordination, advocacy, and support for UW students. This is a 1.0 FTE, 11-12-month onsite position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health care, public health, counseling, health education, or related field
  • At least two years of direct interaction with patients in a healthcare setting
  • Proficiency with electronic health record systems (e.g. EPIC)
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of experience providing care management, health counseling and/or health education

Responsibilities

  • Address a range of health and well-being concerns, including mental health, sexuality, gender identity and expression, contraception, sexual assault, abuse and violence prevention, and access to care
  • Assess needs for preventive screening including mental health screening and STI screening, and coordinate care as appropriate
  • Order indicated lab tests (e.g. STI screening) in collaboration with a medical provider; coordinate interpretation and follow-up of results
  • Identify urgent problems and consult with clinical providers as appropriate
  • Facilitate access to care by coordinating referrals, prior authorizations, and communication with internal and external providers
  • Complete Insurance Navigator certification and provide coverage for other HHC navigators as needed
  • Support students in navigating the health care system and accessing appropriate services
  • Connect students with campus and community-based health, counseling, and reproductive health resources
  • Contribute to health education and outreach efforts, including updating materials and delivering presentations as requested
  • Assist with Primary Care and Same Day clinic scheduling, including procedure scheduling
  • Serve as a resource for HHC staff on patient education topics
  • Train as a chaperone for sensitive exams and participate in HHC’s chaperone team
  • Serve on HHC committees as requested
  • Other duties as assigned
