About The Position

Under the direction of the Student Media Manager, the Student General Manager is responsible for leading, planning, and supporting the operations of 22 West Radio. The incumbent coordinates the administrative activities of the station, guides its business functions, participates in the operation of the budget, and assists the Student Media Manager in guiding student participation. The Student General Manager is responsible for adherence to the 22 West Media operating policies and procedures, ASI policies, University regulations, and Student Media Manager directives. They are responsible for setting journalistic and editorial standards, providing a vision for the radio station, and for ensuring its continued production. The Student General Manager ensures that contractual obligations are met, that FCC standards are observed and that the station liaison is provided with accurate and up-to-date administrative information. The incumbent is responsible for representing the station to the campus community, responding to listener complaints/suggestions, identifying future needs, and suggesting strategies for meeting the changing needs and long-term goals of the station.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one year of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be concurrently enrolled at CSULB in six or more undergraduate units (3 or more graduate units) with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
  • Experience with on-air and station management responsibilities, including the establishment of a volunteer station support structure.
  • Must also be familiar with basic print and video production processes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internet software.
  • Acquire skills in Station Playlist Pro and Adobe Audition through training.
  • Acquire skills in FCC broadcast regulations through training.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of broadcast station operations, including administration, technology, production, audience relations, and compliance with FCC, ASI, Foundation, and University policies.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Adaptability.
  • Familiarity with current technology standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of the media production process.
  • Working knowledge of legal concepts such as libel, obscenity, and material disruption.
  • Understanding of public meeting laws, public records/Freedom of Information Acts, and CSU/CSULB/ASI policies.
  • Familiarity with libel defenses, the AP Stylebook libel guidelines.
  • Ability to identify and appropriately respond to requests for corrections.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from students, faculty, staff, regulatory agencies, or members of the local community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to university management, student groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the activities and directs the content of student personnel engaged in broadcasting.
  • Participates in the interviewing and selection of radio staff; leads employee job and station training; plans and delegates work.
  • Leads the coordination of cross-platform content creation with the assistance of the other branches of student media.
  • Coordinates with the Student Media Manager and Graduate Assistants for the training of all student staff and volunteers in all aspects of broadcast media operations including but not limited to writing, editing, programming, producing, engineering, underwriting, and performing. Maintains records of all training.
  • Identifies and prevents from broadcast any material that is potentially libelous, slanderous, obscene, or potentially conducive to a material and substantial disruption of campus activities. Upon threat of litigation or complaint of content, notifies supervisor and ensures that appropriate action is taken to manage the complaint.
  • Schedules and performs critiques of broadcasts monthly.
  • Ensures continual, effective broadcast always.
  • Fulfills all broadcasting responsibilities and recordkeeping requirements of the station in accordance with the standards of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the CSULB Research Foundation Board of Directors.
  • Ensures proper oversight for technical systems such as automation software and hardware to assure uninterrupted programming.
  • Conducts weekly staff meetings with the management team of 22 West Radio. Provides regular feedback, constructive comments, and training for all staff members.
  • Forwards nominations to the Student Media Manager for recognition of outstanding work and possible entry into regional and national competitions.
  • Prepare any report for the 22 West staff meeting, attend the biweekly staff meeting.
  • Prepare the department report for the weekly meeting with 22 West Media Leads.
  • Other duties as assigned, reasonably within the scope of the job.
