About The Position

The Student Radiology Technologist is responsible for screening, positioning, and imaging of patients. This role involves working closely with the Radiology Team Leader and Radiologist to produce diagnostic images according to department protocols, and will only be scheduled when another Radiology Technologist is on duty. The position also requires maintaining good rapport, cooperative relationships, and approaching conflict constructively. The student will help identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution. Confidentiality of patient, physician, employee, and visitor information is paramount, with discussions limited to appropriate personnel in private settings. Maintaining knowledge to perform job duties and assuming responsibility for performing job duties in the safest possible manner to ensure personal and coworker safety, and reporting all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management are essential. The role involves screening patients for safety-related issues before exams, verifying correct patient, and ensuring appropriate clinical history for the requested exam. The student must use two patient identifiers for all exams and follow appropriate procedure protocols according to radiologist specifications, utilizing proper technique and views for the patient’s condition and requested exam. Completing patient-related documentation in accordance with department and hospital policy, and reviewing/completing studies in PACS according to modality and workflow specifications are also key responsibilities. The student is responsible for participation in student education and meeting program requirements, demonstrating self-directed learning, and behaving in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System. Providing quality patient care by considering age-specific, developmental, and cultural needs through competent clinical practice, demonstrating unit/area competencies, and identifying/assisting in the resolution of problems related to safety, sanitation, and maintenance of the environment are expected. Effective communication in all interactions (patient, visitor, co-worker, etc.) and promoting a positive work environment by demonstrating teamwork are crucial. Remaining diligent in keeping the environment safe and communicating with other team members at all times to ensure the safety of all X-ray patients are required. Demonstrating clear clinical skills appropriate to the age of the patient and performing a variety of support functions, including reviewing patient schedules to identify potential problems or incorrect orders, and maintaining department supplies by notifying appropriate personnel when supplies need to be ordered, are also part of the role. Attending training related to daily job functions such as RadNet for placing orders and PACS is necessary. Treating all patients, families, co-workers, and visitors in a caring and respectful manner, being mindful of individual differences, and cultural and ethnic diversity is expected.

Requirements

  • Completion of the first year of an accredited Radiologic Technologist program.
  • Currently enrolled in the second year Radiologic Technologist program.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Upon successful completion of the Radiologic Technology program, Student Radiology Technologist has 6 months to pass the ARRT (R) certification.
  • Incumbents may only remain active in this role for 18 months.
