About The Position

This is an entry-level student position combining basic, routine elements of general labor and facility maintenance. The student worker assists with routine heavy and light manual tasks to support campus upkeep while ensuring zero conflict with academic schedules. The employee reports directly to and works under the direct, close supervision of a foreman, maintenance mechanic, or other designated higher-level staff member. Supervision of others is not a responsibility of this position. This position may be funded through Federal Work Study (FWS) and/or departmental budgetary funds, depending on eligibility and departmental need. Federal Work Study applicants must be approved by the Financial Aid Office prior to employment consideration. If you are unsure of your FWS eligibility, please contact Financial Aid before applying. Requirements

Must be currently enrolled as a student at Monroe Community College
Must maintain satisfactory academic progress and be in good academic standing
Federal Work Study eligibility is required for FWS-funded positions (must be approved by the Financial Aid Office prior to hire)
Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, and terminology of one or more of the electrical, mechanical, or construction trades
Strong communication skills
Able to prioritize tasks and maintain an organized approach to work
Can work with limited supervision
Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team

Nice To Haves

Experience in construction, maintenance, or other trades
Enrolled in an applied technology degree
Interest in pursuing a career in skilled trades or a skilled trades field
Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently

Responsibilities

Assisting skilled or semi-skilled full-time staff with basic general maintenance tasks, such as holding materials, painting, prepping areas for carpentry, installing equipment, or using hand tools for basic tasks.
Loading and unloading vehicles or supply trucks; moving boxes, furniture, or supplies manually.
Prepares and paints and/or refinishes wood, metal, and other surfaces
Demonstrate reliability by adhering to a consistent work schedule, managing time effectively around academic commitments, and reporting absences or conflicts according to department policy.
Develop the ability to receive detailed oral or written instructions, clarify expectations when necessary, and carry out tasks to completion under direct supervision.
Build effective, professional working relationships with a diverse team of peers, full-time facilities mechanics, and supervisors.
Use professional communication tools?such as two-way radios and standard office phones?to accurately relay messages, report facilities issues, or assist with emergency routing.
Gain a practical, hands-on understanding of how to safely select and utilize various standard manual tools (e.g., shovels, rakes, manual wrenches, and tamps) required for basic infrastructure maintenance.
Develop a foundational knowledge of the daily logistical operations required to maintain institutional grounds, clean building spaces, and prep environments for structural maintenance.
Identify specific occupational hazards associated with manual labor, heavy lifting, and varying outdoor weather conditions, applying proper safety precautions and ergonomics to mitigate injury.
