About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of the Office of Student Conduct and Support, this Advisor is responsible for implementing the Polytechnic’s Non-Academic Student Code of Conduct. The Advisor will work collaboratively with other departments at the Polytechnic, including Counselling and Student Well-being, Safety and Security, Athletics, Residence, and the Academic Centres, to provide guidance on matters related to student behaviour and community standards. They will undertake investigations, provide case management support to students, and support the delivery of education and training across the Polytechnic. The Advisor will work with colleagues to triage intake and will participate in the Behavioural Intervention Team.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a relevant field (Social Work, Psychology, Criminology, Law, or an equivalent combination of education and training).
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working with highly diverse student populations.
  • Experience in investigations, case management, administrative law and processes, and mediation.
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals with mental health challenges, including complex and/or acute mental illness.
  • Experience with risk assessment and safety planning.
  • Experience developing/drafting investigative plans, gathering evidence, interviewing, and report writing.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing high-quality, detailed investigation reports addressing individual and systemic issues, including identifying and applying relevant legislation.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite and electronic databases.
  • Advanced mediation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Solid analytical skills to assess relevant evidence and exercise sound judgment and tact.
  • Good counselling skills.
  • Ability to understand and interpret policies and protocols.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in sensitive or confidential matters.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, collaboration, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to upholding the Polytechnic’s priorities on diversity and equity.
  • Great time management and prioritization skills.

Responsibilities

  • Intake and investigation of informal/formal complaints under the Student Code of Conduct by faculty, staff, and students.
  • Triage and review complaints; compile investigative information; identify, obtain, and analyze relevant documentation and evidence; meet with complainants and respondents as needed to gather facts and issues.
  • Conduct investigations promptly, ensuring procedural fairness and rigorous fact-finding; identify barriers and recommend solutions; maintain records in an electronic database.
  • Reviews, analyses and evaluates all evidence and information collected during an investigation, including the identification and analysis of any legal or regulatory issues, in accordance with the related policies and operating procedures.
  • Writes detailed, high-quality reports and correspondence that set out the facts of a case cogently, objectively, and accurately, based on a well-reasoned analysis and objective assessment of the evidence.
  • Review and analyze all evidence collected during investigations, including identification and analysis of legal/regulatory issues; analyze and evaluate information in accordance with related policies and operating procedures.
  • Write detailed, high-quality reports and correspondence based on objective assessment of the evidence; maintain the electronic database of complaints, reports, sanctions, and case management plans; prepare statistical and qualitative reports on Student Code of Conduct matters.
  • GBP students occasionally contact the Student Conduct Advisor for help in handling issues with a GBP Employee or related GBP processes. Although OSCS does not investigate complaints against GBP faculty or staff, we support students by guiding them to the appropriate contacts or offices to resolve their concerns.
