About The Position

Lower Mainland Biomedical Engineering (LMBME) is looking to hire a student to support an innovative Ministry of Health-funded project focused on improving the sustainability of medical device lifecycle management across British Columbia's healthcare system. The project is piloting a new process and application that enables healthcare organizations to identify, redistribute, reuse, and repurpose retired medical equipment before disposal. By extending the useful life of medical devices, the project aims to reduce waste, lower greenhouse gas emissions, improve resource stewardship, and generate cost savings that can be redirected to patient care. Working closely with Clinical Engineers and Biomedical Technology professionals, the student will support the development of a framework for measuring the environmental, operational, and financial benefits of medical device reuse programs. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to healthcare sustainability, circular economy initiatives, climate action, and medical technology management within one of Canada's largest integrated healthcare environments. This co-op is an 8 month term beginning in September 2026.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in one of the following programs at a Post Secondary Institution: Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Health, Health Sciences, Data Analytics

Responsibilities

  • Conducting literature reviews and environmental scans on regulations, standards, best practices, and emerging trends related to medical device decommissioning, reuse, recycling, donation, and circular economy initiatives
  • Researching healthcare sustainability frameworks and methodologies for measuring environmental impacts, including waste diversion and greenhouse gas emissions
  • Developing baseline sustainability metrics and performance measurement frameworks for the project
  • Assisting with the collection, analysis, and interpretation of operational, environmental, and financial data generated during the pilot
  • Supporting the development of standard operating procedures, best practice guidelines, and governance recommendations for medical device lifecycle management
  • Preparing reports, presentations, and briefing materials for project partners, leadership, and Ministry of Health reporting requirements
  • Supporting engagement activities and helping identify opportunities for broader implementation across the healthcare system
