About The Position

This recruitment will be used to fill two (2) part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Captioners for Disability Access Services (DAS) at Oregon State University (OSU).

Disability Access Services (DAS) at Oregon State University is seeking a detail-oriented student Captioner to support accessible learning by producing high-quality captions for academic and campus multimedia content. This position directly supports OSU’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and compliance with accessibility standards for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students.

This role is designed as an educational student employment opportunity, providing hands-on experience in written communication, attention to detail, ethical responsibility, and inclusive practices. Accuracy, consistency, and careful review are essential, as caption quality has a direct impact on student access and academic success.

Requirements

• Strong command of written English, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• Excellent listening comprehension and typing accuracy.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with captioning, transcription, editing, or accessibility-related work.
• Ability to adapt to a wide range of academic subject matter and speaking styles.
• Strong organizational skills and reliability.
• Multilingual skills are a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Create accurate, verbatim captions for pre-recorded and, when applicable, live multimedia content, including lectures, instructional videos, webinars, and campus communications.
• Ensure captions meet current accessibility standards (ADA / Section 504 / Section 508 aligned), including: High accuracy and completeness, Proper synchronization with audio, Correct grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and speaker identification, Inclusion of meaningful non-speech audio when appropriate.
• Review, edit, and proofread captions to ensure clarity, readability, and consistency.
• Progress through the DAS captioning training pathway by demonstrating proficiency at each stage before advancing.
• Follow DAS captioning guidelines, workflows, and quality-control procedures.
• Meet assigned deadlines for captioning projects, understanding that this work directly supports OSU students who rely on captioned materials for access to their coursework.
• Depending on team volume, work stage, and demonstrated proficiency, support captioning workflow coordination, which may include assisting with training and onboarding of newer team members, providing peer feedback and quality review of others' work, and supporting the distribution and tracking of captioning assignments.
• Communicate professionally and promptly with DAS staff regarding project timelines, clarification needs, and progress updates.
• Maintain confidentiality and responsibly handle sensitive academic and student information.
