Student Athlete Wellness Coordinator

About The Position

Reporting to the Director, Student Wellness Services, with a collaborative reporting relationship to the Director, Student Athlete Experience and High Performance Sport, the Student Athlete Wellbeing Coordinator advances a comprehensive, student-centred approach to student-athlete wellbeing. This role supports the integration of mental health, physical health, academic success, and personal wellbeing within the sport environment, contributing to student-athlete success, retention, and overall well-being. The Student Athlete Wellbeing Coordinator serves as a critical liaison between the Department of Athletics and Student Wellness Services, supporting coordinated care, integrated service delivery, and effective collaboration.

Requirements

  • Masters degree in social work, public health/health promotion, counselling, kinesiology, or a related discipline.
  • 3-5 years total experience, minimum of 3 years experience in a mental health or student-facing environment
  • Understanding of the student experience
  • Knowledge of university systems, academic policies, and semester timelines
  • Familiarity with the broader mental health system, including crisis response and emergency services
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (PHIPA, Mental Health Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA)
  • Understanding of Safe Sport principles and frameworks (e.g., UCCMS, Rowan’s Law)
  • Strong case coordination and risk assessment skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary and highly collaborative environments
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills
  • Student-centred, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach
  • Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse and intersecting identities
  • High level of professionalism, judgment, and confidentiality

  • Experience working with student-athletes and/or lived experience in sport is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Leading student-athlete wellbeing case coordination
  • Supporting the development and implementation of proactive wellness initiatives, education, and prevention programming across the Department of Athletics and varsity teams
  • Establishing and strengthening referral pathways across campus and community services
  • Promoting a safe, inclusive, and high-performing sport culture aligned with Safe Sport principles and institutional priorities
  • Collaborating closely with Athletics staff, Integrated Support Teams, Student Wellness Services, healthcare providers, and external partners to support holistic student-athlete care
  • Ensuring alignment with relevant legislation and frameworks, including Rowan’s Law (Concussion Safety) and the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS).
