About The Position

The Student Athlete Mentoring Program is part of the Student Athlete Resource Center’s (SARC) Academic Support Program. Student Athlete Mentors provide extra academic support to student-athletes to improve their retention and graduation rates. Student Athlete Mentors meet with each of their assigned students at least once a week to review their academic progress. In these meetings, the mentor discusses and reviews the student’s academic progress by reviewing their coursework, syllabi, study skills, time management, class attendance, assignments, and tests. Mentors may also provide tutoring as needed. Mentors report their students’ academic progress, meeting attendance, and other pertinent information to the full-time SARC staff.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the basic principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Working knowledge of research and observation techniques for the purpose of recording, classifying, and interpreting factual information.
  • Working knowledge of the techniques and methods of interviewing.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data.
  • Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to participate in and contribute to group meetings, conferences and interviews.
  • Ability to clearly express ideas and recommendations orally.
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and faculty.
  • Ability to provide effective student services such as advising, tutoring, counseling, or other related duties in a college setting.
  • Ability to interact professionally and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff and administrators.
  • Effective communication skills in-person, on the phone and via online systems.
  • Ability to maintain composure and professionalism while providing direct service to students, even in difficult situations.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
  • Must reside in the State of California.
  • Must furnish proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.

  • Knowledge or familiarity in working with, coaching, or mentoring athletes
  • Knowledge of collegiate athletics environments/NCAA compliance
