About The Position

The New School was founded by forward-thinking educators in 1919 to defy the intellectual constraints of a traditional college education. We are seeking a Student Assistant to support the Journalism + Design department’s Journalism Students of Color (JSOC) group. The Student Assistant will organize meetings and events for student journalists who identify as people of color. The group’s purposes are to provide a space to discuss the critical issues of race and diversity in the journalism industry; to surface concerns journalism students of color face at the New School; and to support students with professional development, in collaboration with faculty. The Student Assistant should be self-driven, organized, and someone with experience leading groups of their peers. This position reports to the Journalism + Design departmental faculty advisor. The Journalism Students of Color student assistant is responsible for organizing meetings and events for student journalists who identify as students of color. With the support of the group’s faculty advisor, the student assistant will conceptualize, plan, and lead meetings and events that cultivate a welcoming and supportive space for group members. The student assistant will also lead recruitment efforts to ensure journalism students are aware of the group. The student will meet with the faculty advisor on a biweekly basis during the semester, while leading weekly or biweekly meetings and/or events.

  • Experience leading groups of peers in community-based conversations
  • Understanding of the purpose of journalism from a civic-minded perspective
  • Experience organizing events and meetings
  • Self-driven
  • Highly organized

Responsibilities

  • Identify and recruit group members who will find value from JSOC
  • Organize regular meetings to foster community
  • Serve as a liaison between JSOC and J+D faculty
  • Organize events that highlight diverse voices in journalism for both career development and academic enrichment
  • Conceptualize, plan, and lead meetings and events that cultivate a welcoming and supportive space for group members
  • Lead recruitment efforts to ensure journalism students are aware of the group
