About The Position

This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function. The position involves propagating plants, maintaining greenhouse and outdoor growing areas, performing routine plant care, and assisting with transplanting and potting.

Requirements

• Must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters.
• To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.
• Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
• Knowledge of the planting and care of trees, shrubbery, flowers, and grass.
• Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
• Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
• Skill in managing one’s own time and the time of others.
• Ability to work successfully as a member of a team and independently with moderate supervision.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.

Responsibilities

• Propagates plants using appropriate methods (cuttings, seeds, division) and maintains propagation areas.
• Monitors and maintains optimal growing conditions in greenhouse environments (watering, temperature, ventilation).
• Performs routine plant care tasks including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest/disease monitoring.
• Maintains outdoor plant displays and growing areas, including weeding, mulching, and seasonal care.
• Assists with transplanting, potting up, and container maintenance.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
