About The Position

The APEX Ambassador role supports first-year students through the APEX advising program and provides peer career advising through the office of Career and Professional Development (CPD). Ambassadors will assist Academic Advisors/Career Coaches (AACCs) with coursework, facilitate in-class activities, and offer one-on-one and group support to first-year students. They will also act as a first point of contact for students navigating career exploration, resume writing, and professional development. This role helps develop transferable skills in coaching, communication, data management, and program facilitation.

Requirements

  • Must be in good academic standing and able to balance work commitments and coursework
  • Demonstrated ability to work with peers in a supportive and empathetic manner
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to deliver constructive and encouraging feedback clearly and professionally
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and general digital platforms; comfort with learning and explaining tools such as Handshake and LinkedIn
  • Ability to manage time effectively, meet deadlines, and balance academic and work responsibilities
  • Reliable, punctual, and committed to upholding standards

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with career services, peer mentoring, tutoring, or student leadership
  • Prior experience as an APEX Ambassador for APEX-050 or APEX-051
  • Interest in coaching, human resources, communications, education, or related fields

Responsibilities

  • Attend APEX-050 and APEX-051 advising sections in a TA-like capacity, assigned to one Academic Advisor/Career Coach (AACC)
  • Assist the AACC with grading student reflections and other coursework
  • Run in-class activities on how to use on-campus resources
  • Meet with first-year students as a group or one-on-one to provide additional support
  • Support first-year events throughout the semester alongside AACCs and fellow ambassadors
  • Staff CPD drop-in hours on a rotating schedule (approximately 1-2 shifts per week) and conduct one-on-one appointments
  • Conduct walk-in and scheduled resume and cover letter reviews providing constructive, encouraging, and actionable feedback
  • Introduce students to career assessment tools and online resources available through CPD
  • Support students in identifying majors, industries, and career paths that align with their interests and strengths
  • Assist students with Handshake account setup, profile completion, and platform optimization
  • Provide an introduction to LinkedIn, including basic profile setup and basic networking strategies
  • Coach students on basic job and internship search strategies and timeline planning
  • Refer students to professional CPD staff when questions exceed the Ambassador scope
  • Support scheduled first-year events, such as the Activities Fair, Major/Minor Fair, Hub/Center events, and APEX Experiential Day
  • Assist with career fair preparation, setup, and day-of logistics
  • Co-facilitate CPD workshops, panels, and classroom presentations
  • Promote CPD events to a broader student population
  • Attend all required Ambassador training sessions, team meetings, and professional development workshops
  • Regularly meet with your assigned AACC to check in on role, duties, and student progress
  • Collaborate respectfully with CPD staff, AACCs, and fellow Ambassadors
  • Represent CPD and Institute for Student Success professionally in all campus interactions
  • Track walk-in and appointment data using Handshake
  • Support students outside of class as needed (e.g. class/event or assignment reminders)
