About The Position

The Student & Family Engagement Service Member plays a key role in supporting the delivery of Kid Power’s academic, enrichment, and youth-development programs serving elementary school students. The Student & Family Engagement Service Member supports classroom implementation, student engagement, small-group and one-on-one assistance, curriculum preparation, and family-facing activities across Kid Power’s after-school, tutoring, and summer programs. Key responsibilities include providing flexible student support, helping prepare and facilitate engaging activities, and strengthening consistent, high-quality program implementation. Our ideal candidate loves working directly with elementary-aged students and is comfortable jumping in wherever support is needed. They are energetic, dependable, organized, and able to move between classrooms, small groups, individual student support, curriculum preparation, and family-facing activities throughout the day. This role is a strong fit for someone interested in education, youth development, social work, community engagement, or nonprofit programming who wants hands-on experience supporting the day-to-day implementation of youth programs. Members should be comfortable taking initiative while also working within established curriculum, program expectations, and staff guidance. This is a fully in-person service position. There is no remote or hybrid service component. All service hours, including curriculum preparation, planning, documentation, phone or email outreach, and other program preparation, must be completed at Kid Power’s office, assigned program sites, or in the community where service occurs.

Requirements

Comfortable working collaboratively across multiple classrooms, groups, and program activities
Organized, dependable, self-motivated, and solution-oriented
Ability to take initiative while following established program expectations and staff guidance
Comfortable supporting both individual students and groups of children
Ability to prepare and organize curriculum materials, supplies, and activities
Proficiency with Google Workspace and basic computer applications
Ability to serve in person Monday through Friday and travel between assigned Kid Power offices, schools, and community locations

Nice To Haves

Previous experience working with children in an after-school, summer, school, tutoring, camp, mentoring, or youth-development setting
Experience supporting students in small groups or one-on-one
Experience facilitating or assisting with youth activities or lessons
Experience with family or community engagement
Familiarity with Washington, DC communities and schools
Proficiency in Spanish

Responsibilities

Rotate across assigned classrooms, groups, and program activities to provide additional student support and strengthen daily program implementation.
Assist instructors and program staff with the facilitation of academic, enrichment, social-emotional learning, leadership, service-learning, and youth-development activities.
Provide targeted one-on-one and small-group academic or student-success support based on student and program needs.
Help students engage successfully in activities by reinforcing positive routines, relationship skills, self-management, responsible decision-making, and program expectations.
Support students who need additional assistance during transitions, independent work, group activities, or other parts of the program day.
Provide additional program coverage and continuity across classrooms and activities as service needs arise.
Help create welcoming, organized, safe, and engaging environments where students can participate successfully.
Work closely with the Youth & Family Engagement Lead and program staff to prepare, organize, and adapt staff-approved curriculum materials, supplies, and activities for Kid Power programming.
Prepare materials and learning spaces in advance of lessons, enrichment activities, family events, and special programming.
Support instructors with implementing Kid Power curriculum through modeling, co-facilitation, small-group support, activity setup, and other implementation assistance.
Share observations with appropriate Kid Power staff about student engagement, activity effectiveness, resource needs, and opportunities to strengthen program delivery.
Help organize, maintain, and distribute program supplies, curriculum materials, student resources, and activity materials across assigned programs.
Build positive, supportive relationships with students and encourage consistent participation, attendance, and engagement.
Conduct staff-approved outreach to students and families regarding program opportunities, schedules, participation expectations, upcoming activities, and other routine program information.
Assist families with registration materials, program orientation, and access to approved Kid Power or community resources.
Help recognize and celebrate student participation, progress, accomplishments, and milestones.
Support youth voice initiatives, including Kid Power’s Youth Advisory Board, youth surveys, and capturing youth voice data on site.
Support family activities, orientations, community events, listening opportunities, and other activities designed to strengthen family connection to Kid Power programming.
Collaborate with instructors, teachers, volunteers, and Kid Power staff to support students and coordinate daily program activities.
Communicate relevant observations, student needs, material needs, or site-based challenges to the appropriate Kid Power staff.
Identify and promptly escalate student concerns, safety issues, incidents, or other matters requiring staff intervention in accordance with Kid Power protocols.
Provide activity-specific orientation and guidance to volunteers assisting with member-supported tutoring, enrichment, family engagement, or service-learning activities.
Record required information related to member service activities, which may include attendance, student participation, lesson implementation, family contacts, and brief service notes using established Kid Power systems and protocols.
Participate in required in-person supervision, team planning, reflection, professional development, and AmeriCorps training.
Participate in AmeriCorps Days of Service.
Attend family engagement activities, special events, community-based programming, and other approved Kid Power activities connected to the member’s service assignment.
Maintain professional communication and follow Kid Power policies and procedures related to student safety, confidentiality, documentation, and program operations.
Complete other approved AmeriCorps service activities that support the implementation of Kid Power’s youth and family programming.
