About The Position

Washington State University Tri-Cities GEAR UP program is now accepting applications for a Student Achievement Specialist (SAS) at Heritage High School, in Vancouver, WA. As a Student Achievement Specialist (SAS) you will provide student mentoring and will monitor and collect student data for assessment and reporting requirements. You will be responsible for increasing GEAR UP students’ engagement in their education, positive academic behaviors, family connection to critical school based information, and post-secondary access support for students and families. Duties include, but are not limited to: providing family outreach and education on college readiness, student and academic support services to include student advising, assessing participant’s needs and creating individual action plans. You will also work closely with school personnel and community partners and participate in after school, evening and weekend activities. The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a Department of Education federal program that has been granted to and administered by WSU Tri-Cities. GEAR UP offers direct services to educational institutions and community partnerships. The program aims to increase the number of students from high-poverty middle and high schools who are well-prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience
  • Two years of professional experience must be in student services, specifically providing instruction or direct outreach services to students and/or working with parents in individual or group settings, or related education/experience
  • Knowledge of community, educational and social service resources in the district’s community
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and MS Office software programs Excel, Outlook, Word
  • Willingness and ability to travel overnight and work a flexible schedule, including frequent nights and weekends
  • On some occasions, ability to travel with supervisory responsibility of students

Nice To Haves

  • Three (3) years experience working with middle/high school, higher education, and/or GEAR UP programs
  • Familiarity with organization and operation of school/district administration and university/community college systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people, including peers, university and school administrators, faculty, staff, students and parents, and the general public
  • Experience managing, tracking and reporting program data
  • Experience in student academic support programs
  • Bilingual/Biliterate in English and Spanish
