About The Position

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate individual with composite and metallic design experience to join our airframe structures design team. In this role you will be responsible for the development & detailed designs of structural airframe components. You will be deeply involved in everything from preliminary concept work through production support. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of CAD design and is able to do hand calculations and create detailed models and drawings. If you also have hands-on experience with composite fabrication or machining metal parts - this could be the ideal position for you! Further, you will work collaboratively across our electronics, wiring systems, structural analysis, and manufacturing teams.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of industry work experience (can include internships, university clubs, team programs, and full-time positions)
  • B.S. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or relevant field of study
  • Experience with composite and metallic component/structural design and analysis
  • Excellent problem solving and communication skills
  • Understanding of static and structural hand-calculations
  • Proficiency in CAD
  • Experience drafting using GD&T
  • Experience utilizing multiple manufacturing processes, such as subtractive, additive, carbon fiber composite lay-up, and injection molding
  • Able to work onsite (position is based in Santa Cruz, CA)

Nice To Haves

  • M.S./Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or relevant field of study
  • 5+ years of working experience in relevant industry
  • Experience integrating systems for aircraft
  • Experience with Dassault Systemes/Catia CAD
  • Proficiency in composite structures design
  • Experience in composites manufacturing
  • Experience with finite element tools (Abaqus)
  • Aircraft homebuilding or rapid prototyping experience is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Design lightweight composite/metallic structural aircraft components
  • Perform initial layout and sizing
  • Fastener sizing, bond area sizing, and riveting
  • Composite <-> metallic material compatibility, and galvanic corrosion
  • Detailed drawing creation, and GD&T
  • Direct communication with vendors and technicians for manufacturing
  • Consult frequently with team leads
