Structural Welder Tier III (FCAW/GMAW-SP/GMAW-P)

Riley Power Group•Goose Creek, SC

About The Position

Riley Power Group, LLC is seeking experienced Structural Welders with expertise in FCAW, GMAW-SP, and GMAW-P to support industrial construction, maintenance, and fabrication projects across the United States. Candidates are expected to demonstrate strong technical skills, safety awareness, and the ability to consistently produce high-quality welds that meet applicable specifications and acceptance criteria. The role involves welding carbon and high-strength steel assemblies, including full-penetration and open-root joints, to required tolerances and NAVSEA and ultrasonic testing (UT) quality standards. Welders interpret engineering drawings and welding documentation, prepare joints and welding sequences, use welding and measuring equipment, monitor welding parameters, and inspect work for quality. Work may be performed independently or with fabrication, production, quality assurance, and supervisory teams. The position requires physical work in industrial environments, including extended standing and walking, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in confined spaces. Work may involve extreme temperatures, chemicals, or radiation, subject to applicable safety controls. Required personal protective equipment may include respiratory protection, and respirator use may extend for part or all of an 8- to 12-hour shift. Candidates must complete applicable background, drug, medical, psychological, safety, security, and site-access screening requirements. Schedule and screening requirements may vary by customer assignment.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of hands-on GMAW-P and GMAW-SP welding experience, with demonstrated ability to produce UT-quality welds.
  • At least 3 years of FCAW welding experience, with demonstrated ability to produce UT-quality welds.
  • Experience welding carbon steel, HY-80, and high-strength steel materials in industrial, manufacturing, shipbuilding, or heavy fabrication environments.
  • Ability to successfully complete required welding qualification tests in accordance with NAVSEA standards.
  • Demonstrated proficiency producing full-penetration, open-root welds that meet UT quality requirements.
  • Working knowledge of welding equipment, weld gauges, precision measuring tools, and applicable inspection procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, welding symbols, and welding technique sheets.
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining quality and productivity standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, safety awareness, and commitment to first-time quality.
  • Ability and willingness to work multiple shifts, extended hours, weekends, and overtime as required by the customer.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, flexible, and able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to perform essential physical functions, with or without reasonable accommodation, including occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, extended standing and walking, occasional bending, crouching, kneeling and crawling, and climbing ladders up to 25 feet.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and industrial environments, including environments with potential exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, or radiation, following applicable safety procedures and controls.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when necessary; complete respirator fit testing and meet facial-hair requirements for respirator sealing.
  • Ability to wear a respirator for part or all of an 8- to 12-hour shift when required.
  • Successful completion of required background screening and pre-employment drug screening, including a hair follicle test.
  • Ability to complete any additional medical, psychological, or site-specific customer screenings and meet safety, security, and site-access requirements.
  • Provide a complete, accurate, and updated resume reflecting relevant welding experience, qualifications, and employment history.

Nice To Haves

  • High school diploma, GED, and/or certification in the assigned welding discipline; described as preferred.
  • Previous welding experience supporting submarine, aircraft carrier, shipbuilding, or naval fabrication projects.
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA welding procedures and military fabrication requirements.
  • Experience working with high-strength steel materials and complex structural assemblies.
  • Previous experience performing welds subject to ultrasonic testing (UT) and radiographic testing (RT/X-ray).
  • Experience with three-position plate welding tests.
  • Experience with MIL-100S-1 welding wire and E71T-1 welds.

Responsibilities

  • Perform FCAW, GMAW-SP, and GMAW-P welding on carbon steel, metal alloys, and high-strength steel assemblies to required tolerances and specifications.
  • Weld carbon steel materials, including OSS, HSS, HY, HSLA, and other applicable steel grades.
  • Perform welding on standard bevels and varied joint configurations, including full-penetration and open-root joints.
  • Produce Note 18 joints—full-penetration, open-root welds from one side—to ultrasonic testing quality standards.
  • Perform welds in required positions in accordance with NAVSEA specifications, aiming for first-time quality and UT proficiency.
  • Determine welding layouts, joint preparation, and weld sequences using engineering drawings, technical specifications, and fabrication requirements.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, welding symbols, and welding technique sheets.
  • Perform oxy-fuel preheating and carbon arc gouging as required.
  • Operate welding equipment, tools, and precision measuring instruments, including weld gauges, to verify weld size and quality.
  • Monitor heat input, welding parameters, and weld sequencing to minimize distortion and maintain structural integrity.
  • Inspect completed welds and verify workmanship against applicable quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Monitor and verify welding quality in accordance with statistical process controls, inspection procedures, and quality assurance standards.
  • Identify welding defects, troubleshoot equipment or process issues, and perform corrective actions as needed.
