About The Position

Structural steel shop Quality Control (QC) Inspector and Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) ensures that fabricated steel products match engineering drawings, meet safety rules, and comply with welding codes like AWS D1.1. They test fit-ups, visually inspect welds, check dimensions, and sign off on paperwork before parts leave the shop.

Requirements

  • Active AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) credential.
  • 3 to 5+ years working in a structural steel fabrication shop.
  • Strong skill in reading complex structural drawings, shop details, and weld symbols.
  • Deep understanding of standards like AWS D1.1 (Structural Welding Code – Steel).

Nice To Haves

  • Level II NDT certifications (such as PT or MT) are often preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Weld Inspection: Check welds for correct size, length, and visual flaws (like cracks or undercut) using specific tools.
  • Dimensional Checks: Measure steel assemblies, bolt holes, and fit-ups with tape measures, squares, and calipers to meet AISC tolerances.
  • Code Compliance: Follow welding procedure specifications (WPS) and verify that individual welder credentials are up to date.
  • Documentation: Fill out inspection reports, track non-conformance issues, and maintain material traceability records.
  • Shop Coordination: Work with fitters, welders, and shop managers to fix problems early.
