Structural Steel Quality Inspector
About The Position
The Structural Steel Quality Inspector verifies that fabricated steel products, welds, and coatings meet project requirements, applicable industry codes, and internal quality standards. This hands-on manufacturing position is based primarily on the production floor, with limited office work. The role involves working in an active, non-climate-controlled facility and requires extended periods of standing and walking while inspecting materials and fabricated components, as well as comfort working in varying temperatures. This contract-to-hire opportunity offers the potential for long-term employment. The inspector contributes directly to product reliability, manufacturing quality, continuous improvement, and safe production practices.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience in structural steel fabrication.
- Background in quality control, inspection, or a related manufacturing position.
- Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC standards.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and technical specifications.
- Experience using inspection tools, including fillet weld gauges, V-WAC gauges, squares, tape measures, and other standard quality inspection equipment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail and a consistent focus on quality and safety.
Nice To Haves
- Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification.
- Familiarity with nondestructive testing methods, including Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), and Penetrant Testing (PT).
- Additional certifications in structural steel fabrication, bolting, coatings, or welding inspection.
- Previous experience in a steel manufacturing facility.
Responsibilities
- Examine fabricated steel components, welds, and coatings for compliance with project requirements and quality standards.
- Apply AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, AISC, and other applicable industry codes during inspections.
- Check incoming materials, components, and consumables for defects and specification compliance.
- Identify inspected materials and maintain accurate inspection records, logs, and quality documentation.
- Inspect, calibrate, and maintain welding equipment and quality control instruments.
- Assist with welder qualification tests and certification processes.
- Help train employees on welding practices, fitting requirements, and quality procedures.
- Maintain controlled drawings and support other quality management activities.
- Work with production personnel and management to investigate and correct quality issues.
- Contribute to process improvements and participate in company training.
- Follow established safety procedures and encourage safe work practices.
