About The Position

AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Structural Engineering Intern for its transportation department. The intern will assist with the design and inspection of highway structures, including bridges, culverts, and tunnels, and will work under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member. The position is expected to begin in Summer 2027 and requires scheduled in-office work in Virginia Beach, Virginia as part of a hybrid work schedule. Interns gain hands-on experience in engineering, design, and infrastructure projects while developing technical and professional skills and collaborating with experienced professionals.

Requirements

Be pursuing a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field and have completed at least one year of study.
Graduates with a bachelor's degree may apply if they plan to continue to a master's degree; they must have been enrolled in their bachelor's program in the most recent school term and intend to pursue an advanced degree in the same or a similar discipline after the internship.

Nice To Haves

Completed coursework in statics, strength of materials, introductory steel design, and introductory reinforced concrete design.
Ability to follow procedures and pay attention to detail.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
Proficiency developing calculations with software such as Excel or Mathcad.
Interest in bridge design.

Responsibilities

Perform assignments using standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out engineering tasks.
Prepare engineering-related calculations.
Perform quantity takeoffs and cost estimates.
Review shop drawings.
Assist in inspecting bridges, culverts, and tunnels.
Prepare details for construction drawings using CAD software.
Work under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member.
