Structural Engineer IV

Arcfield•Louisville, CO

About The Position

Orion Space Solutions (OSS), part of Arcfield, is seeking a structural engineer to support the development of small satellites, CubeSats, complex payloads, electronic units, ground support equipment, and other sensing systems. The engineer will work cross-functionally with engineering and programmatic groups, including systems engineers and program managers, and address open-ended analysis problems through proactive communication and problem-solving. The role involves leading and assisting with structural analysis, developing and executing finite element models, performing first-principles calculations, and conducting static, dynamic, and thermal analyses. The engineer will collaborate on design optimization, conduct trade studies, communicate analysis findings, contribute structural guidance to design and test activities, support environmental test campaigns, and specify structural and mechanical hardware.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 8–10 years, a master's degree and 6–8 years, or a Ph.D. and 3–5 years of professional work experience.
  • At least 5 years of professional work experience in the space industry.
  • At least 3 years of experience in structural analysis.
  • At least 3 years of experience in mechanical design for small satellites using CAD software.
  • Proficiency in finite element analysis software, specifically Siemens FEMAP, and in basic structural and dynamic principles.
  • Strong understanding of structural mechanics, dynamics, and materials science principles relevant to aerospace applications.
  • Mechanical engineering computer-aided design modeling experience in SolidWorks or a similar tool.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities, including the ability to identify, assess, and resolve complex structural challenges and performance issues.
  • Ability to bound difficult problems using first principles and hand calculations.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and concisely to engineers, managers, customers, and other audiences.
  • Detail-oriented approach and commitment to quality, accuracy, and compliance in structural analysis and evaluation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a small team environment with little oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and assist with structural analysis of small satellites, payloads, sub-assemblies, and ground support equipment.
  • Develop and execute finite element models (FEM) to simulate and predict structural behavior using NASA and Mil Standards.
  • Perform first-principles calculations throughout the design cycle.
  • Perform linear and nonlinear static, dynamic, and thermal analyses to assess stress margins, fatigue life, and potential failure modes.
  • Collaborate with design engineers to optimize structural designs, materials, and configurations for performance, weight, cost, safety, and reliability.
  • Conduct trade studies and sensitivity analyses to evaluate design alternatives, assess design margins, and mitigate structural risks and uncertainties.
  • Generate analysis reports, technical memos, and presentations communicating results, conclusions, and recommendations to stakeholders, including management, customers, and regulatory authorities.
  • Provide structural input to guide preliminary and detailed designs.
  • Provide structural feedback on correcting design non-compliances.
  • Provide structural input during test planning and process review.
  • Collaborate with test engineers and technicians (AI&T staff) on developing and validating structural models, simulations, and test plans for ground and flight testing.
  • Use CAD software to design and develop satellite components and ground support equipment.
  • Support and design environmental test campaigns.
  • Identify inefficiencies or issues with analysis processes and propose or implement solutions.
  • Specify structural and mechanical hardware and support quoting efforts.
