About The Position

DC Structures is seeking a Structural Designer to join its design and fabrication team. This role goes beyond drafting: designers virtually build structures in 3D before fabrication and field construction. Using architectural plans, structural engineering requirements, and project specifications, the designer develops detailed 3D models of complete structural framing systems in Revit and/or Cadwork. The work includes modeling and detailing wall framing, floor and roof systems, beams, posts, heavy timber, connections, openings, and other structural elements. The designer helps coordinate architecture, engineering, fabrication, and construction, and ensures models and documents are accurate, constructible, efficient, and complete. The role produces structural drawings, framing plans and details, shop and fabrication drawings, cut sheets, component drawings, material and component takeoffs, and drawings for engineering and client review. The designer works closely with fabrication and operations teams so modeled components can be fabricated, packaged, delivered, and assembled in the field, and collaborates with project stakeholders to identify and resolve conflicts, constructability challenges, and missing information. Projects include customized wood-framed and heavy timber buildings across the United States, such as luxury homes, timber residences, barn homes, equestrian facilities, event venues, wineries, commercial buildings, mixed-use structures, and large custom timber structures. Projects may combine conventional wood framing, heavy timber, engineered wood products, complex roof systems, large spans, custom connections, and prefabricated components.

Requirements

  • Experience with 3D modeling, CAD, BIM, drafting, or detailing.
  • Ability to read architectural and structural construction documents.
  • Experience producing construction documents, framing plans, or shop drawings.
  • Strong computer aptitude.
  • Strong mathematical and spatial reasoning.
  • Ability to visualize complex structures in three dimensions.
  • Excellent organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to communicate with both designers and builders.
  • Self-motivated and accountable, comfortable asking questions, and interested in improving systems and processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of wood framing or heavy timber construction.
  • Experience with Revit and/or Cadwork.
  • Experience with Tekla or AutoCAD.
  • Experience with BIM modeling, structural drafting, wood framing design, timber framing, shop drawings, or fabrication modeling.
  • Understanding of building sequencing and constructability.
  • Bluebeam proficiency.
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Detail-oriented, curious, technically minded, construction-minded, and a strong problem solver.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed 3D structural models using Revit and/or Cadwork.
  • Model complete wood-framed and heavy timber building systems.
  • Develop framing layouts for walls, floors, roofs, beams, posts, and timber systems.
  • Translate architectural drawings and structural engineering requirements into coordinated, buildable structural models.
  • Determine how structural components come together and identify potential conflicts before they reach the field.
  • Incorporate engineering requirements, details, connections, and revisions into the structural model.
  • Coordinate architectural, structural, and fabrication requirements within the model.
  • Review work for accuracy, constructability, efficiency, and completeness.
  • Produce detailed structural drawings, framing plans and details, shop and fabrication drawings, cut sheets, component drawings, and material and component takeoffs.
  • Develop drawings for engineering and client review and incorporate revisions into final construction documents.
  • Create accurate information for prefabrication and field installation.
  • Work with fabrication and operations teams to ensure modeled structures can be fabricated, packaged, delivered, and assembled in the field.
  • Collaborate with architects, structural engineers, project managers, fabrication teams, construction teams, general contractors, clients, vendors, and suppliers.
  • Identify and resolve design conflicts, constructability challenges, and missing information before fabrication or construction.
