The City of Hanford is hiring two Streets Maintenance Workers in the Public Works Department’s Streets Division. The position performs semi-skilled street maintenance work and provides field maintenance support for special projects. The role is flexibly staffed at the I or II level. Worker I is an entry-level position with immediate supervision while learning duties; Worker II is the journey-level position, performs the full range of duties, and generally works under general supervision. Workers may receive technical and functional supervision from a Senior Maintenance Worker. Duties include maintaining, repairing, painting, constructing, and installing streets, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks, traffic signs, and pavement markings; asphalt repaving and repairs; weed abatement; operating hand and power tools and other assigned equipment; and setting up barricades and cones and controlling traffic around work sites. The position also responds to public complaints and questions, maintains tools and supplies, keeps records, supports and trains less experienced staff, responds to emergencies and after-hours service calls, and performs related duties. Worker I qualifications include knowledge of common tools and materials, basic maintenance procedures, and safe work practices, as well as the ability to perform heavy manual labor, maintain records, use office equipment and software, communicate effectively, and work cooperatively with people from varied backgrounds. Worker II additionally requires knowledge of street maintenance techniques and California MUTCD traffic-control standards, and the ability to operate motorized and specialized equipment, work with heavy equipment, drive safely, and read schematic diagrams and manuals. A typical qualification for Worker I is high school completion or equivalent; some construction or field maintenance experience is desirable. Worker II typically requires two years of responsible experience similar to Streets Maintenance Worker I with the City of Hanford. Worker I must possess or be able to obtain a California Class C driver’s license and a Class B license with tanker and air brake endorsements within 12 months of appointment. Worker II must possess or be able to obtain a California Class B license with tanker and air brake endorsements. Both levels must be able to obtain work-zone traffic-control certification within the first 12 months of employment. Recruitment includes competitive evaluation of qualifications and a written examination and/or oral-board interview.
