This is an entry-level position in the Streets Division under the general supervision of the Streets and Stormwater Supervisor. Employees perform a variety of street and stormwater maintenance tasks, including manual labor and equipment operation. The position also requires the demonstrated ability to take initiative and make effective field decisions, whether working independently or as part of a team, to ensure safe, efficient, and timely completion of work. Work schedule is primarily Monday – Friday 6:30 am – 2:30 pm with the availability to respond to weather related emergency. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Minnesota Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tanker endorsements or ability to obtain within six months of hire; satisfactory driving record – must meet Federal D.O.T. regulations.
  • 1 year of previous experience with street maintenance, road or general construction, and/or operating light equipment.
  • Must be available to work overtime, shift changes, emergency call-outs, or to be on call, as necessary, or assigned.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Thorough practical knowledge of principles, practices and methods including tools and equipment used in street maintenance.
  • Practical knowledge of City equipment, general repair techniques and preventative maintenance requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively with public.
  • Ability to perform work requiring lifting, shoveling and operation of light and heavy equipment.
  • Must have a basic understanding of construction.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all levels of City personnel, external vendors and the public.
  • Must have the ability to accept constructive criticism or discipline in a positive manner, initiating self-development to improve job performance.
  • Ability to perform duties with tact, diplomacy, and discretion.
  • Ability to be detail oriented and follow through with tasks.
  • Must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department and exhibit a positive attitude.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous snow removal experience requiring a commercial driver’s license.
  • Previous asphalt or concrete experience.
  • Possess a Class A driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Performs work of a manual and equipment- assisted nature including but not limited to frequent lifting, shoveling, operating light equipment and manual labor.
  • Performs duties associated with snow removal, including plowing streets, sidewalks, and parking lots using light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs street maintenance activities, including sweeping, patching, overlaying, curb repair, catch basin repair, and storm sewer repair.
  • Operates vehicles, requiring a valid class B driver’s license, including tanker and air brake endorsements
  • Follows and contributes to oral and written instructions, including supervisor’s and lead’s work orders, directions and equipment operation.
  • Provides effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
  • Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours and outside regular hours as necessary.
  • Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public.
  • Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.
  • Performs essential position duties and responsibilities under the working conditions and physical demands described herein.
