About The Position

The City is hiring for a Streets Maintenance position, with opportunities at three levels: I, II, or III. This role involves performing a variety of skilled duties related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of City roads and other City facilities. The positions are full-time, non-exempt, and will remain open until filled. Specific hiring ranges and grades are provided for each level, with Street Maintenance I at Grade 14 ($21.94 – $26.92/hour), Street Maintenance II at Grade 15 ($22.94– $28.09/hour), and Street Maintenance III at Grade 17 ($24.93 - $30.51/hour). All positions require a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License, Class B with tanker endorsement within six months of hire, and are subject to drug testing and driver's license verification. Employees must have a home telephone for emergency call-outs and live within 20 miles of the Midvale Public Works Facility. These are on-call positions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Street Maintenance I: two (2) years' experience as an equipment operator performing the same or similar duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Street Maintenance II: three (3) years' experience as an equipment operator performing the same or similar duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. One year as Operator I or equivalent experience.
  • Street Maintenance III: four (4) years' experience in concrete work, asphalt patching and as an equipment operator performing below or similar duties, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Three years as Operator II or equivalent experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License, Class B with tanker endorsement.
  • Must possess a home telephone for emergency and standby call-outs.
  • Must live within 20 miles of the Midvale Public Works Facility.
  • Considerable knowledge of operating basic manual and power hand tools.
  • Working knowledge of the operation of a variety of light and heavy equipment such as rollers, backhoes, sweepers, salting trucks, snowplows, etc.
  • Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions associated with road work.
  • Ability to follow simple instructions.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Ability to tolerate weather extremes in work environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with fellow employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Operates front-end loader in the removal, loading and transportation of asphalt, gravel, dirt, and other material related to maintenance and repair of City streets.
  • Assists with City cleanup/bulky waste removal.
  • Operates dump truck in the transportation of various materials related to construction and maintenance of City streets.
  • Transports asphalt or cement; refill area with new material and rolls asphalt with power roller.
  • Operates sweeper to clean streets.
  • Sweeps and shovels debris into trucks from gutters and grates.
  • Operates dump truck or loader in clearing snow and hauling debris, asphalt, sand and other materials.
  • May operate backhoe to dig holes and trenches to repair or install lines on a training basis.
  • Operates snowplow, and salt truck to clear road of snow and ice.
  • Operates street sweeper and water truck to clean gutters of dirt and leaves.
  • Maintain 24-hour emergency call.
  • Inspects and maintains all equipment after operation (Street Maintenance III).
  • Operates jackhammer, compressor, backhoe, and front-end loader for the demolition and removal of curb, gutter and sidewalk (Street Maintenance III).
  • Prepare sub-base material; set forms and install reinforcement and expansion joint material; finish concrete using various hand tools (Street Maintenance III).
  • Inspect and maintain storm drains from dirt and corrosion (Street Maintenance III).
  • Repair and maintain city traffic control signs and devices (Street Maintenance III).
  • Assist with City celebrations (Street Maintenance III).
  • Assist Foreman in leadership responsibilities (Street Maintenance III).
