About The Position

Under general direction of the Public Works Operations Manager and assigned under direct supervision of the Streets Manager and Streets Foreman, performs street construction, maintenance, and repairs. This role involves operating and maintaining various street maintenance equipment, conducting routine inspections, performing tasks such as street resurfacing, asphalt patching, snow removal, ice control, concrete work, and installing/repairing street signs and guardrails. The position also includes paving, striping, marking roads, assisting with work zone setup and cleanup, performing minor equipment repairs, maintaining records, and handling minor building maintenance. Safety procedures and effective communication are essential.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Streets Equipment Operator I – One Year of experience in heavy equipment or training in the areas of street construction, maintenance, and repairs preferred.
  • Streets Equipment Operator II – Two years of experience with knowledge in streets construction or related maintenance and repairs. Experience with operating basic heavy equipment.
  • Streets Equipment Operator III – Four years of experience and proficient in street construction or related maintenance and repairs. Strong leadership skills and capable of mentoring level I and II operators. Capable of loading, unloading and transporting all heavy equipment. Competent and skilled with operating a wide variety of heavy equipment.
  • Valid Utah Driver License.
  • Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver License with Tanker Endorsement within 6-month probationary period (for Operator I).
  • Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker Endorsement within 6-month probationary period (for Operator II and III).
  • Following certifications required or obtained within one year of hire: Flagger (for Operator I).
  • Following certifications required or obtained within one year of hire: Heavy Equipment Training, Flagger, Forklift, Traffic Control Technician (for Operator II).
  • Following certifications required or obtained within one year of hire: Flagger, Forklift, Traffic Control Supervisor, RSI Guardrail or IMSA street light, and OSHA 10 Hour, Heavy Equipment Training including Loader, Backhoe, and Larue Snowblower (for Operator III).
  • Strong math, reading, and analytical skills.
  • Organizing and planning work assignments after instructions are given and complete a wide variety of maintenance activities.
  • Interpersonal relations in order to deal effectively with the public and other city employees.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
  • Must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Training in the areas of street construction, maintenance, and repairs preferred (for Operator I).
  • Snowplow experience preferred (for Operator II and III).

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains various street maintenance equipment, such as backhoes, excavators, street sweepers, asphalt rollers, snowplows, and dump trucks.
  • Conducts routine inspections and preventive maintenance on a variety of hand tools, light and heavy-duty equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
  • Performs tasks such as street resurfacing, asphalt patching, snow removal, and ice control.
  • Conducts concrete work involving patching, repairs, replacement, and new installations.
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces street signs and guardrail as needed.
  • Paves, stripes, and marks roads for traffic guidance and safety.
  • Assists in the setup and cleanup of work zones, including traffic control measures and signage.
  • Performs minor repairs and adjustments on equipment as needed, or reports maintenance issues to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, equipment usage, and maintenance activities.
  • Handles minor building and facilities maintenance repairs, and miscellaneous repairs and maintenance.
  • Follows established safety procedures and regulations while operating equipment and working in various weather conditions.
  • Communicates effectively with team members and supervisors to coordinate tasks and ensure job completion according to schedule.
  • Adheres to departmental policies and procedures, as well as local regulations governing street maintenance operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
