About The Position

The City of Louisville is seeking motivated, hard-working, and collaborative individuals for a Streets & Utilities Operations Technician I, II, or III position. This role offers a career path with growth potential, salary increases, and excellent benefits, starting with little to no experience. The selected candidate will work in a team-focused environment within a small department, performing a variety of street infrastructure, water, wastewater, and stormwater maintenance tasks, as well as other projects. Responsibilities include operating light-duty trucks, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes, street sweepers, and front-end loaders. The Street Maintenance division is part of the Public Works department and is responsible for maintaining approximately 260 miles of streets, street maintenance, snow plowing, water and sewer main maintenance, water meter replacement and reading, utility locates, and storm drainage.

Requirements

  • Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent educational credential.
  • Some experience in operating streets and drainage construction and repair equipment preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of acceptable training, education, and experience may be considered.
  • Must meet the minimum qualifications for a Technician I.
  • Up to one year's experience working with Streets & Utilities Operations (Technician I).
  • CDL (B) tanker endorsement or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire (DOH) (Technician I).
  • Flagger certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from DOH (Technician I).
  • Trench & Shoring Safety Certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months from DOH (Technician I).
  • First Aid/ CPR/ AED certified or ability to obtain within six (6) months from DOH (Technician I).
  • One (1) to two (2) years' experience working with Streets & Utilities Operations (Technician II).
  • Water Distribution Class 1 certification (Technician II).
  • Wastewater Collection Class 1 certification (Technician II).
  • Confined Space Entry certification (Technician II).
  • Traffic Control Technician certification (Technician II).
  • Two (2) to four (4) years' experience working with Streets & Utilities Operations (Technician III).
  • Water Distribution Class 2 and 3 certifications (Technician III).
  • Wastewater Collection Class 2 and 3 certifications (Technician III).
  • Traffic Control Supervisor certification (Technician III).
  • Trench Safety Supervisor certification (Technician III).
  • Stormwater Inspector training (Technician III).
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and traffic laws necessary to perform assigned work.
  • Knowledge of asphalt and concrete repair.
  • Knowledge of the operation and use of light-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City of Louisville.
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater distribution and collection systems, and/or knowledge in other related fields.
  • Skill in the safe operation of heavy equipment in rough, uneven, or slippery conditions.
  • Skill in the use of equipment necessary to maintain a water distribution and wastewater collection system.
  • Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to inspect machinery and mechanical equipment in operation and to detect flaws and defects in operation.
  • Ability to work from and read sketches, maps, blueprints, diagrams, and charts.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work in all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to be on call, work nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Ability to report to work within thirty-five to forty (35-40) minutes when on call.
  • Current driver’s license in good standing with no major violations in the past three (3) years.
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Class B with tanker endorsement, Colorado Driver's License within six (6) months of hire, and must maintain good standing through employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Some experience in operating streets and drainage construction and repair equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate street sweepers, light-duty trucks, dump trucks, tractors, front-end loaders, backhoes, and snowplows in the performance of operations, maintenance, and construction projects and assignments.
  • Load and haul fill rock, asphalt, and other road patch materials.
  • Apply asphalt patches, asphalt overlay, set concrete forms, and perform other street and construction repairs and maintenance functions.
  • Install and repair new and existing utility and service lines.
  • Operate or assist in the operation of monitoring equipment; clear utility lines and repair breaks in the lines as needed; seal manholes; use high-pressure hoses to clean sewers.
  • Plow and remove snow from City right-of-ways during and after snowstorms.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on various equipment that may include checking temperature, greasing, checking oil levels, cleaning, and painting.
  • Install and replace water meters of all sizes.
  • Repair and maintain fire hydrants.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor adjustments on equipment prior to, during, and after operating.
  • Act as a flag person to guide and direct traffic at construction and repair sites.
  • Read water meters with automatic meter reading equipment.
  • Occasionally act as a crew lead (Technician level III).
  • Respond to emergencies and/or disasters that may require additional overtime or adjustments to your normal schedule.
