About The Position

The City of Oxnard's Public Works Department is seeking a Streets Equipment Operator with strong technical and customer service skills to be part of the Streets Division team. The ideal candidates will approach work with a can-do attitude and are eager to learn and develop their career path.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Four (4) years of equipment operation/driving experience or formal trades experience in one or more areas related to the assignment
  • A valid California Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required upon hire or within the first year of employment
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing
  • Proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with ongoing work.
  • Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
  • Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
  • This position requires a 12-month probationary period.
  • Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100, all public employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.

Responsibilities

  • Drive vehicles required to transport materials, tools and equipment; operate light, medium and heavy duty construction and street repair equipment including skid steerers, forklifts, excavators, trucks and trailers, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, graders, rollers, spreaders, mowers and related equipment; operate a variety of hand and power tools such as blowers, jackhammers, concrete saws, weed eaters and other related tools
  • Equipment operation for a variety of construction and maintenance activities involving streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, storm drains, waterways, beaches and related facilities
  • Identify equipment needs for assigned projects; make rental arrangements for equipment not in stock; direct the work of other personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment; train other personnel in the operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Perform a variety of construction and repair duties when equipment is not in operation; construct, maintain and repair concrete and asphalt; dig, shovel, haul and load soil, sand, gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials; sweep and shovel debris and litter; clean and maintain catch basins, waterways and storm drains
  • Perform after-hours emergency work
  • Implement traffic control measures at job sites, including sign placement, traffic control arrow boards, and coning; direct traffic flow.
  • Serve as a crew leader
  • Performs skilled maintenance and repair work in assigned trade and/or area; plans, prioritizes and schedules activities to complete repairs and maintenance work in efficient and timely manner; selects proper tools and equipment for assignment; monitors work site safety; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations.
  • Performs maintenance inspections; troubleshoots equipment, maintenance and/or system issues; identifies repair needs; reviews repair versus replacement costs and makes recommendations; performs required repairs or works with outside contractors for project completion.
  • Organizes and maintains assigned equipment and tools; inspects, cleans and performs preventative maintenance to ensure operability and reliability of equipment and tools.
  • Review equipment and materials required for daily maintenance and work projects; initiate requests for or purchases approved materials and supplies.
  • Prepares and/or maintains activity records, logs, work orders, material requests, reports and/or technical documentation for equipment or building systems.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
