Requirements

  • Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License in the state employed and meet minimum driving standards.
  • Knowledge of: Math to apply fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions, measurements, or logarithms; may use algebraic solutions of equations and equalities, deductive geometry, and/or descriptive statistics.
  • Skill in: Leading or handling machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items such as computers, peripherals, or software programs such as word processing, spreadsheets or custom applications, motor graders, tractors, or dump trucks. Handling or using machines, tools, equipment or relevant work aids. Job involves some latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate equipment.
  • Ability to: Perform supervisory work involving policy and guidelines, solving both people and work related problems; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results and frequent exposure to unusual pressure.
  • Compile and evaluate data or information and possibly recommend action based on results.
  • Read professional publications; compose complex reports and manuals; speak formally to groups outside the organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer associate’s degree or the equivalent of two years of college or specialized vocational training in public administration, engineering, or a closely related field and ten years’ experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff, including training and providing for technical or professional development, selecting or recommending selection, assigning and evaluating work, counseling, disciplining, and terminating or recommending termination.
  • Oversee and direct street maintenance and construction, drainage projects, and sidewalk, curb and gutter projects, ensuring compliance with safety regulations by departmental personnel.
  • Interact with the public to provide information, address complaints or issues, and explain work procedures; coordinate with other departments to achieve task/project completion; resolves disputes between departmental personnel and private citizens.
  • Inspect condition of streets, bridges and drainage facilities, and inspects departmental projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.
  • Develop departmental budget; oversee and approve expenditures; order supplies and materials for employees and assesses condition of departmental vehicles and equipment; prepares requisitions for replacements.
  • Perform administrative functions, such as preparing payroll, setting up and maintaining records, or preparing memos and correspondence.
  • Gather information/data to support periodic and special reports documenting activities for area of responsibility.
  • Ability to make decisions that will affect a large segment of the organization and the general public; work in a dynamic environment with responsibility for developing policies and practices.
  • Attend or conduct staff, safety, and other professional meetings to exchange information; attends in-service training and technical or professional classes, seminars, or conferences to improve technical or professional skills.
  • Require responsibility and opportunity for achieving moderate economies and/or preventing moderate losses through the management or handling of supplies of high value or moderate amounts of money.
