About The Position

The City of Topeka's Street division is seeking two hard-working individuals to join its team as Street Maintenance Worker Trainees. Incumbents in this position perform a variety of manual labor in the maintenance of street surfaces, curbs and gutters, and snow and ice control. Work includes pick and shovel work, asphalt patching, crack sealing, placing concrete, spreading rock, transporting construction material, and operating snow and ice removal equipment. This is an entry-level position with an excellent field training program to assist incumbents in obtaining the skills needed for advancement. Trainees will receive training and assistance on company-paid time to obtain a Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL), which is required by the conclusion of the six-month initial hire probationary period. Training, study time, and equipment are all provided by the City. This is steady, year-round employment. This is considered an essential position, and incumbents must be available for after-hour snow/ice removal and other emergency work as needed.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Possess and maintain a valid Class C Kansas driver's license.
Maintain a city insurable driving record.
Be 18 years of age at time of hire.
Obtain a Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) by the end of the six-month probationary period.
