About The Position

This is a semi-skilled and/or skilled position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, and sign installation and fabrication. The role may involve limited responsibility for report preparation, daily public interaction requiring tact and professionalism, making work decisions of varying complexity, and potentially limited supervisory assignments. The position reports daily on street maintenance crew activity. This role can be filled as a Worker Trainee, Worker I, or Worker II, and may involve leading crews.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED (Worker Trainee, Worker I)
Must have a valid “B” Texas Commercial driver’s license or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of hire (Worker Trainee)

Responsibilities

Operates and maintains grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and chippers to maintain City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, signage and other assigned areas.
Operates and maintains City trucks and trailers.
Excavates and back-fills trenches and other areas with hand tools.
Operates earth moving equipment such as dump trucks, trailers, backhoes and loaders to maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, alleys, right of ways, signage and other assigned areas.
Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, loaders, trucks, dump trucks and trailers.
Loads and unloads construction materials, bench stock supplies and others as assigned.
Operates specialty equipment such as street sweepers, crack sealers, rollers, asphalt patch trucks, paint stripers and asphalt zippers.
Follows procedures for safe and effective work zone and traffic control when required.
Follows procedures for safe handling and application of pesticides and other hazardous chemicals.
Works cooperatively with Sign Technicians maintaining, fabricating and installing new signs.
Follows procedures for lock-out-tag-out of equipment.
Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
Performs rough carpentry, painting, and concrete work.
Performs scheduled vehicle and equipment inspections and records maintenance actions on proper forms.
Records traffic control device maintenance actions on proper forms.
Records work performed and man-hour expenditures on work orders.
Assists other Public Work Divisions/City Departments when requested.
Participates in on-call schedules and duties.
Performs other job-related duties as required.
Coordinates, supervises and performs “On the Job Training” and City Safety Programs (Worker II).
Maintains inventories related to division equipment and supplies (Worker II).
Familiarization with City of Schertz Code of Ordinances, as well as other streets and transportation infrastructure standards and specification codes (Worker II).
Assumes the duties of their supervisor in his/her absence (Worker II).
Ensures good housekeeping and organization of tools, equipment, vehicles and work area (Worker II).
Assures crews are organized and ready to complete task at hand (Worker II).
Application of pesticides and proper handling and use of other chemicals (Worker II).
