Street Maintenance Worker Trainee
About The Position
This is a semi-skilled and/or skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, sign installation and fabrication. May have limited responsibility for the preparation of reports and records; daily contact with the public requiring tact, diplomacy and professionalism; may make numerous work decisions weekly, varying in complexity; may have limited supervisory assignments; reports Streets Maintenance crew activity daily. This position may be filled as a Worker Trainee, Worker I or II and may perform as a leader of a crew or crews.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Must have a valid “B” Texas Commercial driver’s license or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.
Responsibilities
- Operates and maintains grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and chippers to maintain City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, signage and other assigned areas.
- Operates and maintains City trucks and trailers
- Excavates and back-fills trenches and other areas with hand tools
- Operates earth moving equipment such as dump trucks, trailers, backhoes and loaders to maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, alleys, right of ways, signage and other assigned areas.
- Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, loaders, trucks, dump trucks and trailers.
- Loads and unloads construction materials, bench stock supplies and others as assigned.
- Operates specialty equipment such as street sweepers, crack sealers, rollers, asphalt patch trucks, paint stripers and asphalt zippers.
- Follows procedures for safe and effective work zone and traffic control when required.
- Follows procedures for safe handling and application of pesticides and other hazardous chemicals.
- Works cooperatively with Sign Technicians maintaining, fabricating and installing new signs.
- Follows procedures for lock-out-tag-out of equipment.
- Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
- Performs rough carpentry, painting, and concrete work.
- Performs scheduled vehicle and equipment inspections and records maintenance actions on proper forms.
- Records traffic control device maintenance actions on proper forms.
- Records work performed and man-hour expenditures on work orders.
- Assists other Public Work Divisions/City Departments when requested.
- Participates in on-call schedules and duties.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.
- Coordinates, supervises and performs “On the Job Training” and City Safety Programs (Worker II only).
- Maintains inventories related to division equipment and supplies (Worker II only).
- Familiarization with City of Schertz Code of Ordinances, as well as other streets and transportation infrastructure standards and specification codes (Worker II only).
- Assumes the duties of their supervisor in his/her absence (Worker II only).
- Good Housekeeping and organization of tools, equipment, vehicles and work area (Worker II only).
- Assures crews are organized and ready to complete task at hand (Worker II only).
- Application of pesticides and proper handling and use of other chemicals (Worker II only).
