About The Position

Performs skilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of street, bridge, ditch, and storm drainage facilities and systems. This role involves performing required labor for construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, operating various power construction and maintenance equipment, and ensuring safe procedures are followed. The position also includes inspecting and repairing streets and drainage systems, maintaining records, responding to service requests, and performing routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.

Requirements

  • Completion of high school or GED equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and coworkers; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral or diagrammed instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.
  • Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work; may also occasionally assist in the planning of work assignments performed by others within a limited area of operation.
  • Performs work operations which permit frequent opportunity for decision-making of minor importance and also frequent opportunity for decision-making of major importance; the latter of which would affect the work operations of other employees, citizens, and/or the City to a moderate degree.

  • Responsible for City vehicles and equipment, digital radios, and any other equipment or property assigned to perform the essential duties.
  • Regular use of complex machines and equipment – Motorized vehicles and equipment, including pickup truck, saws, pumps, compressors, mowers, weed eaters, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, mobile or portable radio.
  • Continuously required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 65 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to street construction and maintenance work.

Responsibilities

  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, building catch basins, mowing, trimming trees, etc.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the street department, such as sump pump, chainsaw, jack hammer, etc.
  • Responsible for assuring that safe procedures are followed in the operation of all street department equipment.
  • Inspects and/or repairs streets, drainage systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance activity, repairs, etc.
  • Responds to complaints and service requests regarding potholes, flooding, right-of-way problems, or related issues; evaluates the situation; explains findings to supervisor.
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans assigned equipment after use.
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking after use.
  • Read and understand vehicle and/or equipment manuals.
  • Performs manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Work in the Sanitation Department, as needed.
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
