This is an entry-level position in the City of Madison’s Engineering Operations team, offering paid, on-the-job training for a career in Public Works. The role involves operating trucks and specialized mechanical equipment, and performing heavy manual labor related to the cleaning, maintenance, CCTV inspection, and repair of the City’s storm and sanitary sewer systems. Employees will perform a variety of laboring tasks and operate related equipment under direction, exercising some judgment within established guidelines. Specific work assignments may vary. Employees typically advance to Street and Sewer Machine Operator 1 after 12 months. Qualified applicants with a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with a tanker vehicle (N) endorsement may be hired immediately as a Street and Sewer Machine Operator 1. Further advancement is based on a competitive process. The position offers a starting annual salary of $57,862.22 for Street and Sewer Maintenance Worker 1, with potential to start at $60,392.28 for Street and Sewer Machine Operator 1. Salary progression includes steps based on employment duration. Longevity pay is available starting in the fifth year. Regular work hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, for 40 hours per week. The selection process may begin before the closing date.
