The Strategic Operations Graduate Intern will work on data issues for a City-backed affordable housing insurance program, a multi-agency effort aimed at reducing premiums. The internship provides exposure to large-scale data analysis in a government context at the intersection of affordable housing and data science. The initial project involves an in-depth analysis of annual building inspections, a large database of records about the physical condition and maintenance of the affordable housing portfolio; additional projects may follow as data needs develop. The intern may also support other initiatives as they arise. The intern will receive coaching and support in synthesizing complex quantitative data and unstructured qualitative information to inform decision-making and program design, collaborating across disciplines, and strengthening quantitative and communication skills while working under tight time constraints. By the end of the first project, the intern will have written at least one report or presentation for senior leaders, produced reproducible R scripts to wrangle a database, and gained knowledge of building inspection processes and predictive factors behind high insurance costs in affordable housing. The position is in the Data, Policy and Strategic Initiatives team in HDC’s President’s Office and reports to the Vice President, Strategic Operations. It is a school-year internship beginning in November 2026 and continuing into spring 2027, based in NYC’s Financial District. Expected hours are up to 20 per week. The graduate hourly rate is $20. If needed, HDC will fully support an intern’s application for credit or a stipend from their school or university.
