About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Strategic Advisor for the Strategic Advisory team within Policy Advocacy, part of its Public Policy team. This individual contributor role will help define and deploy Anthropic’s consequential policy positions, serving as a strategic resource across fast-moving policy work. The advisor will own a portfolio of important positions and partner with leaders and colleagues across policy, legal, communications, product policy, research, and other functions. The role calls for someone who can build structure amid ambiguity, work effectively through substantive disagreement, prioritize decisions and closure, and contribute directly to both strategic and operational work. Policy Advocacy turns Anthropic’s policy priorities into evidence-backed positions, research, campaigns, and partnerships. The Strategic Advisor’s work includes producing complete, deployable position materials; translating technical research and policy analysis into policy-ready content; resolving contested positions through structured processes; coordinating policy strategy for major launches; creating working groups and strategies for emerging issues; and distilling complex topics into narratives that can be incorporated into Anthropic’s policy materials. The role offers the opportunity to shape Anthropic’s policy voice on AI governance while supporting the work of federal, state, and international affairs teams. Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. The role follows a location-based hybrid policy: staff are currently expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more. The listed annual salary range is $265,000–$295,000 USD. The minimum education is a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience, in a field relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience. Visa sponsorship may be available, subject to the candidate and role.

Requirements

  • Direct experience developing and testing messages for policy, advocacy, or communications audiences.
  • Experience translating technical material, such as scientific, engineering, or deeply technical policy content, for non-expert decision-makers.
  • Ability to work across multiple policy issue areas simultaneously and develop fluency in new areas quickly.
  • Interest in and some experience with technology policy; deep AI policy expertise is not required.
  • Experience building or running rapid-response processes, crisis playbooks, or signature programs in fast-moving environments.
  • Ability and interest in serving internal clients, including federal, state, and international affairs colleagues, without needing to own external relationships.
  • Minimum education: bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience in a relevant field.

Nice To Haves

  • 8–10+ years of professional experience in corporate public affairs, management consulting, government relations, policy or political campaigns, think tanks, or similar fast-paced, cross-functional environments.
  • Experience in technology, financial services, energy, pharma, or another heavily regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate emerging issues and proactively develop organizational perspectives.
  • Experience designing and running a signature program or flagship campaign end to end.
  • Experience translating topics for policy-relevant audiences through communications, visual storytelling, marketing, or advocacy.
  • Deep AI policy expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Own a portfolio of Anthropic’s highest-priority policy positions, including position papers, FAQs, talking points, and fact sheets, and manage their versions, intended audiences, strategic relevance, and internal access.
  • Drive organizational consensus on contested technical policy positions by working with subject matter experts across federal affairs, state affairs, international affairs, national security, legal, communications, and research; moderate dissent, call the question, and document outcomes.
  • Develop and test message framings with internal and external audiences, iterating quickly and assessing what resonates and why.
  • Translate technical research, model capabilities, and scientific content into policy-ready language for federal, state, and international policymakers, their staff, and legislators.
  • Serve federal, state, and international affairs teams as an internal senior advisor by improving processes, establishing shared material libraries, and building the collateral and strategies they need.
  • Drive complex, cross-functional policy projects to resolution when no single team owns them end to end, including model launch policy strategy, narrative coordination on contested issues, and working groups on emerging topics.
  • Establish rapid-response playbooks for time-sensitive events, coordinating across legal, research, and external affairs.
  • Partner with policy communications to maintain consistency of message and voice across Anthropic’s policy work.
  • Anticipate emerging issues, work proactively with internal experts to develop Anthropic’s perspective, and prepare materials before external pressure emerges.
