About The Position

This position is for a seasonal assignment limited up to six months from date of hire. Make an impact: Join a dedicated team to help keep Salem clean and beautiful. This position involves maintaining nearly 500 Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) facilities and hundreds of acres of natural areas that capture stormwater runoff and improve the flows into our streams. Requirements

  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver’s license and meet the City of Salem’s driving standards.
  • General maintenance, restoration, repair, grounds keeping, construction trade or other manual labor experience.
  • Knowledge on how to use common landscape tools safely and effectively.
  • The ability to operate large trucks and pull trailers.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards in the workplace and the precautions necessary to stay safe.
  • Respect towards others, along with an enthusiasm to understand and value individual differences to help create a diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Positive attitude and skills in providing great customer service.
  • Commitment to safe work practices.
  • Ability to build and maintain good working relationships with coworkers, employees, officials, and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Perform weeding, trash removal, planting, and minor irrigation system repairs to keep facilities in shape.
  • Use hand tools like shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, and operate larger equipment such as mowers, edgers and power hand tools.
  • Work closely with the Green Stormwater Infrastructure section’s career maintenance operators, Natural Infrasturcture Specialist, contracted landscapers, and Marion County Adults in Custody (AIC) work crews.
  • Provide care for plants in stormwater facilities by watering, pruning, and removing dead vegetation.
  • Identify commonly planted species.
  • Identifies invasive and noxious weeks; removes invasive and noxious weeks and applies integrated pest management practices to prevent spread of weeks through planning and proper disposal.
  • Assist in the repairing, rehabilitating, and rebuilding of stormwater quality facilities.
  • Perform other landscaping maintenance functions as assigned to ensure stormwater facilities operate as designed.
  • Replace or replenish soil, level treatment areas, mitigate erosion and channelization issues, repair minor concrete issues, clear blockages, and loosen compacted soil.
  • Maintain detailed records of work using the City’s asset management system and tools like iPads, cell phones, and laptops.
  • Offer friendly assistance to anyone with questions about maintenance work or stormwater facilities.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
