Summerhill Market is a family-owned grocery retailer proudly serving Toronto since 1959. Known for exceptional customer service and chef-inspired prepared foods, we operate multiple retail locations across the GTA and continue to grow while maintaining our commitment to quality, community, and hospitality. Our stores offer a unique shopping experience featuring fresh produce, premium meats, bakery, prepared foods, grocery, floral, catering, and specialty products. We're looking for an experienced retail leader to oversee one of our flagship locations and lead a high-performing team that delivers an exceptional customer experience every day. The Store Manager is responsible for the overall leadership, operational performance, financial results, customer experience, and people development of a Summerhill Market retail location. This role is ideal for an experienced Grocery Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager, General Manager, Operations Manager, or Retail Leader who thrives in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment. The successful candidate will oversee all store departments while ensuring operational excellence, strong financial performance, exceptional merchandising standards, food safety compliance, and an outstanding shopping experience. This is a highly visible leadership position requiring a hands-on operator who leads by example, develops strong leaders, builds accountability, and creates a positive, engaging culture throughout the store.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive retail leadership experience within grocery, specialty food, or high-volume retail
  • Previous experience as a Store Manager, General Manager, Assistant Store Manager, Operations Manager, or Department Manager
  • Proven success leading large teams in a fast-paced retail environment
  • Strong knowledge of grocery operations, merchandising, inventory management, labour planning, and customer service
  • Demonstrated experience managing financial performance, sales, labour, and operational KPIs
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills

  • Food Handler Certification considered an asset

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day operation of a high-volume grocery store
  • Ensure exceptional execution across Grocery, Produce, Meat, Bakery, Prepared Foods, Floral, Cashiers, and Receiving
  • Deliver an outstanding customer experience through operational excellence and service standards
  • Maintain exceptional merchandising, cleanliness, inventory accuracy, and store presentation
  • Execute seasonal programs, promotional events, and new product launches
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and develop Department Managers, Supervisors, and Team Members
  • Build a culture of accountability, teamwork, engagement, and continuous improvement
  • Conduct performance management, succession planning, and leadership development
  • Foster strong communication across all departments and shifts
  • Manage labour planning, scheduling, payroll, sales, shrink, inventory, and departmental profitability
  • Monitor KPIs and operational metrics to drive continuous improvement
  • Control expenses while maximizing sales and customer satisfaction
  • Ensure staffing levels support business demands
  • Lead by example on the sales floor, ensuring every customer receives exceptional service
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and effectively
  • Promote a culture of hospitality, quality, and community engagement
  • Ensure every department consistently reflects Summerhill Market's standards
  • Ensure compliance with food safety, sanitation, health and safety, and company operating standards
  • Maintain compliance with CFIA, Toronto Public Health, Ministry of Labour, and internal policies
  • Support inventory control, receiving, and loss prevention initiatives
  • Partner closely with Commissary Operations, Buyers, HR, Marketing, Finance, and Executive Leadership
  • Execute company initiatives while providing operational feedback and identifying opportunities for improvement
