About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to foster the interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, safety, and compliance. The position involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment; lifting up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally; and occasional ladder climbing and driving for bank deposits, meetings, or visits to other stores. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required. The work environment is fast-paced with moderate noise, and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety-control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Ability to frequently walk and stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and handle merchandise and equipment.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb a ladder and drive for work-related duties; own transportation may be used.
Some travel, including limited overnight stays, is required.

Nice To Haves

High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Support store merchandising by staging, stocking, and storing merchandise and ensuring it is presented according to established practices and management direction.
Assist with inventory management, including processing damages and markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
