About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and addressing store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and helps maintain customer service, store presentation, inventory, financial integrity, safety, and compliance with company procedures. The role involves frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, handling merchandise and equipment, and lifting. Occasional duties include climbing a ladder and driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores. Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays. The work takes place in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash-register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory-management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
For external candidates, one year of retail experience is preferred.
Ability to frequently walk and stand; bend, stoop, and kneel; and handle merchandise and equipment.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Ability to drive or provide personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and travel to other Dollar General stores.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer-service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies, including those in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited at the designated bank.
Support the store’s financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development, cooperation, collaboration, and communication between store employees and the Store Support Center.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
