About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to provide interactive development for an external candidate pursuing a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period.

The candidate helps lead customer service and store operations, supports recruiting and staff development, assists with merchandising and inventory activities, and helps maintain the store’s financial integrity, security, cleanliness, and safety. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and is expected to follow company policies, procedures, and documentation deadlines.

This is a fast-paced position involving frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, merchandise handling, and lifting. It may include occasional ladder use and driving to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores. Some travel with limited overnight stays is required.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret documents such as diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
• Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
• Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
• Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
• Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
• Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to solve problems and handle situations where limited standardization exists.
• Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
• Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
• Frequent proper lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
• Occasional climbing using a ladder.
• Occasional driving and some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

• High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
• One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
• Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

• Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
• Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storage, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and store direction.
• Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
• Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
• Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond to customer needs.
• Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
• Participate in store opening and closing activities.
• Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
• Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
• Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
• Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
• Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
• Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
• Develop staff and foster cooperation and collaboration among employees.
• Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
• Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
• Occasionally drive to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
