About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. This position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The role supports recruiting and staffing, merchandising, inventory management, ordering, customer service, store security and financial controls, store opening and closing, and maintaining a clean and safe store. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence, review operating statements for business trends and improvement opportunities, and complete required paperwork and documentation. The position involves some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organization skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Ability to frequently handle merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, containers, carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb using a ladder.
Ability to occasionally drive or provide personal transportation for work-related travel.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and appropriate use of fixtures, signage, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Help maintain financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends and opportunities related to sales, labor, profitability, inventory turns, expenses, shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants.
Ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
