About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to foster interactive development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps operate the store, including in the Store Manager’s absence, and supports customer service, merchandising, inventory, financial controls, staffing, employee development, and compliance with company procedures. The role requires occasional travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, including cashier accountability and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle varied situations where limited standardization exists.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Frequent handling of merchandise and equipment, including hand-held scanners, pricing guns, box cutters, merchandise containers and carts, two-wheel dollies, and U-boats.
Frequent lifting of up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 55 pounds.
Occasional climbing using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for work-related travel.
Must be 21 or older, as stated in the job title.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities; recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and preparing and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Provide ongoing attention to staff development and ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally drive or provide own transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other Dollar General stores.
