About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to foster the development of an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and serves as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees. The role involves supporting customer service, store financial integrity, safety, merchandising, and staff development. Some travel is required, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Must be 21 years of age or older.
Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Ability to frequent walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, handle merchandise and equipment, and lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally.
Ability to climb a ladder occasionally.
Ability to drive or provide own transportation occasionally for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with moderate noise and occasional exposure to outside weather conditions.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Some travel, including limited overnight stays, is required.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, and pricing merchandise in accordance with established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide customer service leadership and respond sensitively to customer needs.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited in the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and cooperation among employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
