About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and supports customer service, merchandising, inventory, store security, financial controls, and staff development. The role involves occasional travel, including limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including report generation.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety controls, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organizational skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
Ability to demonstrate the company’s values, foster collaboration, communicate tactfully and directly, respond sensitively to customer needs, and apply basic retail principles.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Position is limited to candidates aged 21 and older.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing and driving.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities.
Support store merchandising, including staging, stocking, storage, presentation, and appropriate use of fixtures, signing, and pricing.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service.
Model compliance with company procedures and policies.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Support store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain a clean, well-stocked, and safe store for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and recruit, hire, and train qualified applicants to meet store needs.
Help ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally travel to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
