About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The role is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager position and is held for a limited period. The candidate helps lead customer service, merchandising, inventory and financial controls, recruiting and staffing, and store operations. They may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence, review operating statements to identify trends and opportunities, and ensure required paperwork is completed accurately and on time. The role involves frequent physical activity and some travel, including occasional overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal and organization skills, with attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking and standing; bending, stooping, kneeling, and handling merchandise and equipment.
Ability to lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally; occasional ladder climbing.
Occasional driving or providing own transportation for work-related travel.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storage, signing, and pricing merchandise according to established practices and the Store Manager’s direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and demonstrate responsiveness to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are safely deposited at the designated bank.
Assist with financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements for business trends, expense control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support employee development and act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores as needed.
