About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for the Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence and help maintain customer service, store operations, financial integrity, compliance, and staff development. The role requires occasional travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, SAFE, and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.

High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience preferred for external candidates.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling; frequent handling of merchandise and equipment; frequent lifting up to 40 pounds and occasional lifting up to 55 pounds; occasional ladder climbing; and occasional driving or providing own transportation.

Bilingual Spanish skills may be preferred at certain store locations.
High school diploma or equivalent is strongly preferred.
One year of retail experience is preferred for external candidates.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, including staging, stocking, storing, signing, pricing, and presenting merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and demonstrate responsiveness and sensitivity to customer needs.
Follow company procedures and policies and serve as a role model for employees.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely in the designated bank.
Assist in maintaining store financial integrity through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash-control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees and foster cooperation and collaboration.
Support employee development and ensure compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Occasionally travel to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, or visit other Dollar General stores.
