About The Position

The Store Manager Candidate supports the Store Manager in implementing store processes, including employee supervision, staffing, inventory management, stocking and receiving, paperwork, and other store needs. The position is intended to develop an external candidate for a Store Manager role and is held for a limited period. The candidate may operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence, support customer service and staff development, and help ensure compliance with company procedures, safety practices, and applicable labor laws. The role involves frequent physical activity in a fast-paced retail environment and some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Requirements

Ability to read and interpret diagrams, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations, including percentages.
Knowledge of cash-handling procedures, cashier accountability, and deposit controls.
Ability to learn and perform IBM cash register functions, including generating reports.
Knowledge of inventory management and merchandising practices.
Knowledge of cash, facility, and safety control policies and practices, including deposits, store keys, and SAFE and STARS programs.
Knowledge of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, counseling, and termination practices, including legal compliance and internal processes.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Effective organization skills and attention to detail.
Ability to solve problems and handle situations with limited standardization.
High school diploma or equivalent strongly preferred.
Frequent walking and standing; frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Ability to frequently lift up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift up to 55 pounds.
Ability to occasionally climb using a ladder.
Occasional driving or providing personal transportation for bank deposits, management meetings, and visits to other stores.
Some travel, with limited overnight stays.

Nice To Haves

One year of experience in a retail environment is preferred for external candidates.
Bilingual Spanish speakers may be preferred at certain store locations.

Responsibilities

Assist with recruiting and staffing activities, including recruiting, hiring, and training qualified applicants.
Assist with merchandising, staging, stocking, storing, signing, pricing, and presenting merchandise according to established practices and Store Manager direction.
Assist with inventory management, including damages, markdowns, register scanning, paperwork, facility controls, and preparing for and conducting inventories.
Follow ordering practices to meet or exceed in-stock targets.
Provide leadership in delivering superior customer service and respond to customer needs.
Model company procedures and policies described in the employee handbook, SOP manual, and company communications.
Participate in store opening and closing activities.
Ensure company funds are deposited safely at the designated bank.
Support the financial integrity of the store through cashier accountability, key control, security practices, and cash control procedures.
Help maintain clean, well-stocked stores and a safe environment for customers and employees.
Operate the store in the Store Manager’s absence.
Review operating statements to identify business trends, expense-control opportunities, potential shrink, and errors.
Complete paperwork and documentation according to guidelines and deadlines.
Support staff development and foster cooperation and collaboration among employees.
Act as a liaison between the Store Support Center and store employees.
Ensure store compliance with federal labor laws and company policies and procedures.
Travel as needed, including driving to make bank deposits, attend management meetings, and visit other Dollar General stores.
